After a residency at the Mojave National Preserve, Dani Dodge will have a solo show at the Joshua Tree Black Rocks Gallery.

Where: Black Rock Art Gallery in the Black Rock Nature Center located at 9800 Black Rock Canyon Rd, Yucca Valley, CA 92284

Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday

Phone: (760) 367-3001

The show runs through April 29, 2022.

Story:

My residency at the Mojave National Preserve began in 2018, and I made regular visits through 2021. Over those years, I developed a relationship with the Preserve's Joshua trees. I felt the joy of their abundance in the first two years, the devastation of their burning in 2020, and then a glimmer of hope at their potential recovery in late 2021.

To me, they are souls. They are gods. They are nature incarnate, and I grasp onto their struggle to survive deeply within my soul as though it were my own.

“Embracing the Incarnate” follows and documents my four-year journey of love with the Joshua trees and the Preserve.

My work in the show depicts the complexity of the time by displaying altered images from 2018 through 2021 that demonstrate the majesty and the fragility of the Joshua trees and their environment. Each of the images has been printed on layers of clear plastic, painted with 24-karat gold leaf, fused, mounted on black, and framed. The result is a feeling of slippage that fluctuates between shadow and shimmering light.

DRIVEN

curated by Dani Dodge

at Sasse Museum of Art, 1334 N Benson Ave Unit D, Upland, CA 91786

We make do. Artists. We sometimes don’t have a studio, the luxury of paint, or even running water.

 But we can’t stop creating.

Like the Sasse Museum of Art, we find a place. Be it temporary. Be it crowded. Be it chaos.

 And we make art happen.

This show reflects the die-hard passion and drive of artists who have to make their mark in the world even when they don’t have a place, or simply the wrong place, to fulfill that vision.

Interest in type, typefaces, words, language, and typography has been subversively infiltrating the contemporary art and design realms for decades. Oftentimes this artistic outlet is relegated to an outsider art form, a meme, or simply graphic design, but the fine art that incorporates text and type is some of the most powerful art available to contemporary audiences. This exhibition will highlight the beauty and variety of typographical expression including that within street art, graphic design, contemporary painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture.

Dani Dodge will be showing her series “Los Angeles Love Letters” in the exhibition.

Art: Theater for the Mind

Art: Theater for the Mind

Curator: Gene Sasse

Jun 2nd -  Jul 7th 2019

Opening Reception Jun 2nd  2-5pm

The mind is a kind of theatre, where several perceptions successively make their appearance; they pass-through our minds, then pass again, glide away, then mingle in an infinite variety of postures, situations, forms and structures.

Art as is life is a journey of discovery. It’s a lesson in expression that talks to the viewer on an individual level, painting memories of life, drama, and inspiration set in a space that is theatre for the mind.

Dreams Upon Waking at MÜTÖ in Budapest

Dreams Upon Waking

The limited possibilities of reality provide an alternative platform to explore uncertainty that focuses on liminal spaces and conditions. These transitional spaces could be either porches that join interior and exterior spaces together, or dreams that seem so real in the moment only to become elusive fragments, difficult to piece back together in the morning. The artists in Dreams Upon Waking explore the theme of memory and the abstraction of human consciousness and state of being, as they reconstruct the often fragmented pieces of these fading visions. The juxtaposition of these artists opens the door to an interesting discussion on our quixotic efforts to grasp the intangible. The show is a collaboration between Los Angeles-based Durden and Ray and Budapest's MŰTŐ.

Disclosure: Confessions for Modern Times

Durden and Ray will celebrate the start of 2019 with an exhibition that allows people to cleanse their souls through the art of disclosure.

January is about cleansing the past and making new starts. But since the early 1990s, independent polls have shown the rapid growth of those without a religious affiliation. So where do people go to confess, if not to a higher power? Maybe an art gallery?

Curators Dani Dodge and Alanna Marcelletti decided to play devil’s advocates and create a space where the participants can disclose transgressions and progress unfettered into 2019 through art.

The show is a contemporary take on the sacred and secular acts of confessing sins, and includes interactive confessionals, each designed by different artists, and figurative art exploring the experience of being human through relationships, tragedy, translation of autobiography and Barry Manilow.

Synthetic Shorelines at Durden and Ray

Artists from Iceland and Los Angeles explore their relationship to self and coastal existence in Synthetic Shorelines at Durden and Ray

Curated by Freyja Eilíf of Ekkisens Art Space, Reykjavik, Iceland

Artists: Sara BjörgDani Dodge, Freyja Eilíf, David Leapman, Katrína Mogensen, Sean NoyceKristín Morthens, and Ty Pownall

Synthetic Shorelines are a living thought and manmade boundary between elements, where textures and forms are combined in novel mindshapes.

In this exhibition, artists from different shores—Los Angeles and Reykjavík, Iceland—meet and lead an expedition where no boundaries exist except the self in its human condition.

In our gender-conscious, emotionally-trodden world of unexplained confines, these artists create a journey that merges two different shorelines and leads the viewer further into the unknown: an oceanic bottom of subconsciousness where the otherworld takes over, where time is ripe to search for clues about our new-age-media, post-humanistic existence.

The artists exhibiting work at Synthetic Shorelines share use of abstract imagery while digging into dimensions of the self through processed-based and medium-specific art. Many of the artists share an animist spirituality through materials.

The opening will include a unique opportunity for viewers to merge with their inner computer spirit when Freyja Eilíf will lead them through a meditation into digital dimensions through a mixed media video installation. Sara Björg will present objects that trigger physical interaction. Her methods encourage physical learning and offer a new perspective on play.
Also, Katrína Mogensen will host a performance related to her work on Nov. 17, 2018.

"Specter of Documentation" opening at Durden and Ray

Specter: appearance, to look at, a phantom, a threatening or haunting possibility

Documentation: the gathering, collation, synopsizing and coding of printed material for future reference; the orderly presentation, organization and communication of recorded special knowledge to produce a historical record of changes in variables; the act or instance of the provision of documents or supporting references or records.

Specter and documentation, upon first consideration, could seem to be the antithesis of one another. Specter deals in the ephemeral appearance of possibility with poignant undertones, while documentation traditionally resides in the orderly, matter-of-fact recording, noting, or organization of material to produce a record for future reference. Art chosen for this exhibition exists in the intersection of specter and documentation. It bears the echo of inhabitation and embodies the everyday mundane. Of special interest are works that present an image or object embodying documentary tendencies while a second and incidental reading conjures issues of cultural relevance and controversial debate.

In tandem with this exploration lies the notion of “soul theft” through photography and camera devices. While the elusive roots of this concept belie its lack of reality amongst anthropological studies, there is a kernel of truth to how the picture taker can extract an essence through the final product, metaphorically presenting the complex haunting prospect of the human condition. The artists in this exhibition, through photography, painting, drawing, video, and installation, investigate the specter of the person left behind. The banal and the extraordinary, residing in the objects and places that humans inhabit, and then abandon.
