Interactive installation at BLAM, Los Angeles, CA
9x18-foot room
Summary: Video, paper airplanes and an instruction booklet to lead participants on an exploration of imagining and actuation. Participants first encountered the installation as a round cocktail table outside the room. It had handmade "instruction manuals," pencils in a can, and paper for making paper airplanes. After that, there were choices to be made. What vacation photos do they want to see? What pastime keeps them from going where they want in life? Drugs? Porn? Work? Sounds of a GPS system “recalculating” over and over again could be heard inside one pile of suitcases. In another were the sounds from a bar on a busy Saturday night. As participants left, they had the option of calling an 800 number if confused by the exploration. They heard: “Here’s the deal. Life is full of choices. Make one. Then get out of the chair and do it.”
Materials: leather easy chair, mylar, slide projector, video projectors, video, Polaroids, carpet, squeaky dog toys (under the carpet), vintage suitcases, sand, tourist souvenirs, vacation slides sourced from eBay, and more.
