<image:caption>Dani Dodge 2018 Outdoor site-specific installation at Cow House Studios, Wexford, Ireland 120 feet long, 12 feet wide Summary: During her two-week artist residency at Cow House Studios in Ireland, Dani Dodge had been making art based on items scavenged from the managed forest near her studio. The artworks were focused on ideas of home, nesting, and otherness. Then she heard that the blizzard of a lifetime was on its way, and decided to create this outdoor installation in collaboration with Mother Nature. She created and installed the brightly painted stumps and broken-branch ladders before the snow fell, not knowing what would be left after the storm. Two days later when she could return to the site, she found that the brightly colored works remained with their otherness highlighted by the bright blanket of snow. Materials: Tree stumps and branches found on the forest floor, paint, twine.</image:caption>

The candles were on the floor and surrounded by gravel. Dodge invited people who came to LACE to light a candle. Through this work, Dodge re-created a common scene on L.A. sidewalks and streets: the remains of a roadside memorial. But in “Bright Lights,” what people burned was their own myths of Los Angeles. <image:caption>Dani Dodge 2018 Installation at MuzueMM (part of Emulations) 17x13-foot room Summary: Dani Dodge’s multimedia installation “Screenburn” commented on the romance and glamour of movies that lure so many to Los Angeles. It examined the idea of Hollywood as a nonexistent pot of gold presented as a sales job to tourists. The centerpiece was a 1967 Zenith television set on an altar playing a video showing the road from her actual home in Lincoln Heights to the fantastical Hollywood Walk of Fame. It is surrounded by images of movies that have been shot in Los Angeles. These movies that show people’s lives as heroic were for the most part generated by a half-dozen white men sitting in a room trying to sell Coca-Cola. Therefore the average person who can’t reach the pinnacle portrayed by Hollywood must accept a simulation of this reality instead. Materials: Video, vintage television, photographs with paint, fabric, director’s chair, glitter, candles.</image:caption>

Gallery, Brooklyn NY 15x17-foot room (2018 reinstalled smaller version at Aegean Center for Fine Arts, Paros, Greece) Summary: Fugitive Love Song documents Dodge’s 2016 guerrilla art project carried out in locations throughout Los Angeles. For 366 days, using lipstick, spray paint, markers and printed flyers, Dodge surreptitiously (and sometimes shamelessly) spread a singular message: “# Just the way you are.” By distilling a potent message of affirmation through this iconic song lyric, Dodge used her public intervention to insert small, fleeting moments of joy into the otherwise chaotic tempo of everyday life. <image:caption>Dani Dodge 2015 Interactive installation at Coos Art Museum, Coos Bay, OR 16x19-foot room (2016 reinstalled at Gallery 825, Los Angeles) Summary: Fragile vintage bird cages stuffed with heavy rocks were piled on the museum floor. One wall was covered with a cream-colored mixed-media painting incorporating bandages and sutures. Videos danced on window screens: birds flying, planes lifting off into the air. Visitors followed the instructions posted at the entrance of the museum gallery and pick up a rock from the pile near the door. They felt its weight, its smoothness, its capacity. They wrote on it their own personal burden, then walked across the room and put it on a pile of other rocks, also written with words such as fear, poverty, and inertia. A boulder floated above them. Visitors knew that when the exhibit was over, Dodge would take each of the burdens and hurl them into the ocean. People left (un)burdened. Materials: vintage bird cages, video, window screens, rocks from across the country, Styrofoam sculpture (of rocks), bandages, sutures, paint.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dani Dodge 2015 Installation/performance at LA Pride festival in West Hollywood, CA 20x20-foot room Summary: Dani Dodge’s “CONFESS” allowed participants to share their worst sins with a stranger. The result was not sacramental grace, but an anonymous typed note that detailed each transgression on a gold piece of paper, which Dodge posted for all to see. Confessors were tasked with twisted penance. Then, the sinners were absolved, at least in the eyes of art. Over the two days of the performance, the walls went from black to gold with more than 300 confessions. People waited in line to relieve themselves of their sins. One confessor wrote to Dodge after the event saying: “I felt so comforted by our conversation and your words of affirmation that I pulled over to shed a few tears on the way home.” Materials: wood (to make confessional), black curtains, stations and velvet ropes, kneeler, typewriter, gold chalk that coated the ground where people stood in line. After confessing, people tracked gold footprints throughout the festival.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dani Dodge 2018 Installation at Shoebox Projects, Los Angeles 15x18-foot room Summary: In 2017, 244 people died in car crashes in the city of Los Angeles. In June of that year, Dodge was fortunate to survive being sandwiched between two cars in a multi-vehicle pileup on the 101. During a month-long residency at Shoebox Projects in downtown LA, Dodge explored the moment of clarity that she and many others realize after a crash or traumatic incident. The installation took visitors on a journey that started with walking though spinning soft sculptures shaped like car parts, two videos that represented road trips and split-second decision-making, and static sculptures created from salvaged windshields. Materials: Salvaged car windshields, fabric, disco-ball motors, vintage television, videos, paint, glitter.</image:caption>

It incorporates video and sculpture while allowing members of the public to contemplate their own memories of home. Participants wrote their memories on blocks and hid them in shoeboxes, including those under the bed made of vinyl and plastic wrap that hung from the ceiling. <image:caption>Dani Dodge 2016 Interactive installation at HB Punto Experimental, San Diego, CA 16x25-foot room, plus hallway Summary: Dani Dodge’s work confronts emotion. It invites people to write, to burn, to tear, to throw. It requires participants to reveal. “Afterfear” is an installation created from the ghosts of her exhibitions past. Visitors are invited into a room to witness the remnants of fear, and contemplate, who are these residual ghosts? Are they us? Within the exhibition, people had the opportunity to exorcise their own ghosts. Materials: 13 totems made from recycled Styrofoam, a wall made from bricks with the ashes of burned fear suspended within them, walls made from the remnants of a a time-based piece that allowed people to tear the walls for the room. Also, (not shown) video and pieces created from firecrackers, paper and paint.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dani Dodge 2015 Interactive installation at LA Artcore, Brewery Annex, Los Angeles, CA 25x30-foot room (2016 reinstalled at artist’s loft during the Brewery Artwalk) Summary: The interactive installation Peeled & Raw focused on fear, and what happens when we try to cover it up rather than facing it. Whether it be terrorism or the fear of having our flaws exposed on Facebook, it is what we do with fear that determines who we are. In Peeled & Raw, participants picked away at the layers or wallpaper on the walls, each layer an older and older vintage. They wrote their fears upon the torn scraps and dropped them to the ground. During the closing event, Dodge swept up and then burned the fears. (The image show before and after the public began to tear away at the walls.) Materials: Wallpaper (dating back to 1940s), vintage television, video that interspersed 1950s instructions on how to wallpaper a home with video of nuclear explosions and people being urged to arm themselves on a 2015 Fox News broadcast, furniture, bowl of onions.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dani Dodge 2016 Interactive installation at BLAM, Los Angeles, CA 9x18-foot room Summary: Video, paper airplanes and an instruction booklet to lead participants on an exploration of imagining and actuation. Participants first encountered the installation as a round cocktail table outside the room. It had handmade "instruction manuals," pencils in a can, and paper for making paper airplanes. After that, there were choices to be made. What vacation photos do they want to see? What pastime keeps them from going where they want in life? Drugs? Porn? Work? Sounds of a GPS system “recalculating” over and over again could be heard inside one pile of suitcases. In another were the sounds from a bar on a busy Saturday night. As participants left, they had the option of calling an 800 number if confused by the exploration. They heard: “Here’s the deal. Life is full of choices. Make one. Then get out of the chair and do it.” Materials: leather easy chair, mylar, slide projector, video projectors, video, Polaroids, carpet, squeaky dog toys (under the carpet), vintage suitcases, sand, tourist souvenirs, vacation slides sourced from eBay, and more.</image:caption>

Her muse is the Joshua Tree. The early American explorer, John C Fremont, who first mapped the Oregon Trail, described Joshua trees as “the most repulsive tree in the Vegetable Kingdom.” But Dodge fell in love with these otherworldly plants as she began a residency in 2018 in the Mojave National Preserve. She was inspired by their strangeness, their symbiotic relationships, and their sensitivity. “I spent every day of two weeks visiting the Joshua trees and getting to know them on an individual and personal level,” Dodge said. “I was fascinated by the bold, frightening shapes they created against the desert sunrise, and captivated by the warm, beautiful stories they told beneath their spikey exterior.” And, I was deeply inspired their ability to survive within a very small area of Earth, while feeling devastated by the knowledge that the species could be decimated within my lifetime.” Climate models have shown that this iconic plant, which exists only in the Mojave Desert region of the US between 1,300 and 5,900 feet elevation, will lose 90 percent of its range in eastern California by 2100. Basically, the Joshua trees, which grow to more than 40 feet tall, reproduce and disperse too slowly to keep up with climate change. They have survived this long because they developed a shallow network of roots, that spreads about 18 feet around each plant to suck up the infrequent rainwater. Without nectar to attract pollinators, Joshua Trees rely solely on the tiny yucca moth for pollination, a creature that at first appears unassuming but on closer inspection sports unique bizarre, tentacle-like fronds from its mouth. And the yucca moth depends on the Joshua Tree for its survival. Over Dodge’s time in the Mojave National Preserve, and also during a 2019 residency in the Prime Desert Woodland Preserve in Lancaster, Calif., Dodge continues to get to know these plants, who she now considers her friends. “Like many of my human friends, they have a tough exterior, but a sweetness within,” Dodge explained. “They need us now and with this exhibit I hope to bring more awareness of their plight.” In the exhibit, she deconstructs the Joshua Tree spikes into separate stories of survival, love, and loneliness. She deconstructs photos of the plants into a scribbled S.O.S. on their behalf. And she constructs a powerful installation that shows ugliness and beauty are as symbiotic as the Joshua Tree and the yucca moth. Most images by Kristine Schomaker</image:caption>

She spray painted quotes about relationships and sex on discarded mattress she found throughout the city of LA. The resulting photos, all shot in the 15 minutes before dawn, are printed on canvas. Eavesdropping explores relationships on three levels: the modern courtship (10 quotes from online dating profiles) the idealized courtship (10 pickup lines from TV shows), and the real romance of a 20-year marriage (10 quotes from her late husband.) All were spray painted onto discarded mattresses found in the city of LA the summer of 2019, with the exception of the final image created: the final words of her late husband painted on the mattress they shared. Shown at Golden West College “Type” and Galerie Pom Pom in Sydney, Australia in “Return to Aus.”</image:caption>

It incorporates video and old television broadcast monitors as well as a vintage AV cart and vintage wastebasket. The abstract background of the first video was shot on a New York subway, while all the letters and “static” were painted on cardboard found less than a block from Trump Tower. She created the sound for the piece by asking both Republicans and Democrats to make the noise of static and then merging the voices into a composition of sound.</image:caption>
